Challenge
Increasing the monument's visibility and accessibility was the task that was set before us. Our investigation into the monument's underutilization led us to three potential areas for improvement: (1) attracting visitors, (2) providing them with an enjoyable experience, and (3) encouraging repeat visits.
Results
Attracting visitors was the primary goal, so we set up scale models of the monument at tourist hotspots like Utrecht Centraal to demonstrate the Sluis's operation. We also gave out gamified souvenirs that tourists could paint on, making them feel like they were an integral part of the project.
Other Ideas
The initial step was to tidy up and improve the appearance of the surrounding areas and to improve accessibility by installing a bike stand at the monument and a bike rental station at the closest bus stop.
For those who have been to the monument and would like to learn more about it without reading too much, the next step was to create audio guides that could be found on FM and Spotify.
Organize community art and film screenings at the monument by independent filmmakers and artists to encourage repeat visits and also have ad spots in between to generate revenue
